Sanjay Manaktala who is standup comedian. He also runs a prominent youtube channel. Read on to know more about him.
Tell us about your life journey in brief?
SM: I made a video as a parody a long time ago in May 2010, just a parody of something funny I saw online where some lonely engineer type dude was proposing in all the wrong ways to a girl. Back then (5 years ago) it ended up getting 10K hits in about as many days. That is when I started doing standup. I saw youTube as a great outlet, so kept doing it.
What prompted you to start Sanjay Comedy?
SM: Standup comedy is a night time profession, but I want to flex my creative muscles whenever I can. So I would want to put silly stuff out. That is a constant desperate pathetic need for attention and approval
Tell us about your team, if you have?
SM: I work with a bunch of guys. Vamsi/Anish, my cousins Akshat in Bombay, Kenny once in a while, Sundeep/Praveen, honestly too many to count.
What is your dream/ vision?
SM: The videos on Indian YouTube that don’t just pander to bollywood or pop culture issues start to do well. I like Naveen’s channel a lot (Themboxershorts) and The Viral Fever of course because they try to do original content.
What difficulties you face in making the videos/ running your group?
SM: People are very, very flaky and (understandably) it’s hard to get people to work for low cost/free.
Who/ What inspires you or keeps you going?
SM: I got a really sweet message from a young girl a few weeks back about how she hated her job and pouts and complains and is really in a bad place in life, but she thinks of my IT Guy videos and a smile comes on her face and she yells at herself and picks her up and carries on with her day. She just wanted to say thanks and stuff like that really helps me stay motivated. I love it.
What are your future plans with respect to your channel/ group?
SM: To get better at creating, with me and a few guys I can rely on. But to just keep going to be honest.
Any fun/ memorable incident?
SM: Too many. Illegally shooting in Bombay is always fun, one time a guy asked us for money and luckily my cousin had shot on that location more officially before and dropped the name of some local policeman. That was interesting to see him change face and run away.
What advice you’d like to give to someone who is interested in starting a youtube channel/ group?
SM: Start often and start early. Plan to fail 100 times, do not expect success. That and learn the easiest stuff in the world like final cut, after effects, and camera basics. It’s super easy so don’t complicate it for yourself, there is a tutorial for everything.
