Tanmay Shah who left his job at IIT B to follow his heart. Currently he runs a youtube channel – Friday Fiction Films in which he releases one movie every week. Read on to know more about this talented filmmaker.
Tell us about your life journey in brief?
I worked as a Research Associate at Indian Institute Of Technology – Bombay ( IIT- B) after getting graduated with Bachelor of Engineering in Information Technology. I have always been interested in writing stories and poems right from the childhood, but was not sure that it will be expressed through the medium of cinema later on. The first film that I made was recognized at the “International Film Festival”. This inspired me to leave my job and follow my heart.
What prompted you to start FridayFictionFilms?
I had scripts in mind and a friend of mine – Saravanan from Tamilnadu, came to Mumbai for some work , had a full frame camera. And the journey started. Language differences between us reflected in the movies and we started making movies without dialogues . After that I moved to Ahmedabad and carried it forward on my own.
Tell us about your team, if you have?
Recently , we are working on a project of making 52 films ( zero budget films ) this year and as the name suggests, one film every Friday for entire year. Initially , I went back to Ahmedabad, I started making films on my own. I used to write script, screenplay, used to do cinematography and used to direct my films and edit them on regular basis. Now, people are joining the movement and taking up roles as the year is progressing.
What is your dream/ vision?
I want to make quality original fiction films.
What difficulties you face in making the videos/ running your group?
Making zero-budget film every Friday is a mammoth task. Location scouting, convincing actors of all ages and satisfying the script in limited time and resources brings maximum real-time creativity on-board. Getting original music in zero-budget films for me is still a far-sighted difficulty.
Who/ What inspires you or keeps you going?
The innate desire to tell good stories and convey real-life incidences through the medium of cinema, is the biggest inspiration. I have no idea what keeps me going.
What are your future plans with respect to your channel/ group?
To make a platform wherein you can create quality online video content in the form of fiction films. I personally don’t like creating spoofs on other online content , I believe in writing original fiction stories.
Any fun/ memorable incident?
A five year old kid from a near by village was short listed as the protagonist in one of our films. After 80 percent of the shoot, he denied acting out of no reason. I had to sit there for almost 5 hours on Friday morning ( Friday evening being the MUST time to upload our movie ) . I thought of creating some competition in his mind by convincing a dummy kid to give the shot instead of him. He immediately agreed to act and we got the shoot done by Friday afternoon and edited the film on go and released it at evening. Working with kids is always memorable.
What advice you’d like to give to someone who is interested in starting a youtube channel or starting on his own ?
Focus on quality online content and don’t run after views. A channel with a fix framework and set of numbers may not always be a benchmark to judge the quality of films.
Anything else you’d like to share?
Since I make zero-budget films, I need constant support from actors. As the films are as short as 3 to 5 minutes , all depends upon the acting and the screenplay. Recently “WISH” movie reached Sydney Transgender International Film Festival 2014, Australia.
