Aadar Malik who is an actor, does theater, played a stand up comic in one of his plays and interestingly became a stand up comic. Read on to know more about him.
Tell us about your life journey in brief?
I am an actor. Started off with theatre and played a stand up comic in one of my plays and the character that was created is still performing. Having that segregation helps me keep it separate from the other roles I get to play.
What prompted you to take up stand up comedy ?
We were performing this play for thespo which is an all India selection of theatre works performed and executed by under 25 year olds. I had to play a standup comic and I called Tanmay Bhat, he was the only one I knew doing it. Asked him for his material, and would give him writing credit on the play. He asked me to write my own material and then gave me some of his jokes to start with. Then one day I performed at an open mic at the comedy store. Haven’t looked back since.
Tell us about your team, if you have?
I work with SNGcomedy (SCHITZENGIGGLES). We got to our current collective when we met trying to start an improv show. And there after we’ve performed sketch comedy, standup, multiple improvised show formats, and are currently touring our maiden theatre production, THE COMPLETE WORKS OF WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE ABRIDGED.
What type of content you prefer when it comes to stand up comedy?
I use a a lot of music with my stand up. So there are a lot of songs that I perform live on stage. And as far as the selection of topics goes, I prefer to keep it personal to me. About what I have directly experienced, there will be the random observational humour at times, but it will be my opinion.
What is your dream/ vision?
With standup comedy. I’d like to perform my one man show by the end of this year. It will be a mix of standup, some improv, and will rely heavily on music.
What difficulties you face as an stand up comedian?
Excessive self entitled moral policing.
What motivates you or keeps you going?
Applause is a high no drug can replicate.
Any fun/ memorable incident?
Anything that happens organically on stage. Trust me nothing I wrote here will be funny enough to instill your faith in me as a standup comic. Something we’ve always maintained with schitzengiggles live shows, “you had to be there.”
What advice you’d like to give to someone who is interested/newbie in stand up comedy?
Don’t listen to me, I’ve been doing this for less than 3 years.
Anything else you’d like to share?
I hate sharing.
