Jannardan Mehta is an Electronics Engineer turned filmmaker. Read on to know more about this talented filmmaker.
Tell us about your life journey in brief?
An Electronics Engineer turned filmmaker! I was in 3rd year of engineering when I attended a filmmaking workshop. I started making amateur short films and music videos in my hometown Vadodara, Gujarat. Then I came to Mumbai and assisted couple of known filmmakers of film industry. Alongside, I made music videos as freelance director and polished my craft and developed my voice. Then I approached humara movie with a script for short film. They approved it and the film was made! Though it was never that easy!
What prompted you to become a filmmaker?
The quest to tell stories. The possibility to create a world and lives on celluloid and mesmerize people for 2-3 hours. All you create out of zero. Like the God Brahma created universe out of zero!
Tell us about your team, if you have?
I hire freelance DOP, Editors, Music Directors, Sound engineers, Art directors etc. It depends upon the project. All the technicians/artists I hire are well-experienced seasoned people working in film industry.
How many/ What kind of movies you have made?
I am not behind number games. I could have made hundreds of short films, online stuff but I believe in quality. I like to make technically sound high-concept films, no matter how small the budget or limitations are! This is my first professional quality short film and I have made couple of music videos for singers and music composers in the past.
What is your dream/ vision?
I want to make films that provoke people. I want them to question themselves. I want them to explore the things they know, but haven’t thought or cared about.I want to entertain them at the same time make them think. I want to take them to different world, let them fantasize, adventurise and make them realize the bitter/darker/truth of life.
What difficulties you face as an independent filmmaker?
Budgetary and logistical limitations. Team and equipment sourcing.
What inspires you or keeps you going?
The thirst of making films! The passion, the hunger to tell stories.
Any fun/ memorable incident?
We were shooting a shoot-out / encounter scene with police jeep and actors dressed in police uniform in the early morning in Mumbai. Very few people were around and were jogging. We did not have huge light or camera setup. We just had a DSLR. A madam passing by suddenly started running to death, when she saw my actor firing using fake gun! The scenario was so real that she thought a real police encounter was going on! So she ran like hell! I didn’t know that since I was taking the shot. Later my crew told me the incident!
What advice you’d like to give to someone who is interested/newbee in filmmaking?
It’s a tough nut-shell to crack! Be prepared to get your ass burned now and then! The only driving force is love of the art and passion.
